Listen to the secret sound, the real sound, which is inside you. – Kabir
Lulu is very pleased to present our 2011 calendar of 'Classical Women'— women who share a love for classical music, as singers and instrumentalists, as performers and listeners. While the term denotes a period, and a range of styles covering centuries of Western music, we chose it because it also evokes a quality of timelessness that transcends trend or fashion, or any culturally prescribed idea of who we are.
Our project began as a conversation about the relationships between beauty, art, and nature. It was also shaped by our curiosity about the ways that women, who are both inspired by the beauty of classical music, and informed by the culture that surrounds it, experience these relationships.
We begin with the body — the site of pleasure, and the instrument through which we experience our history, our cultural conditioning, and our erotic origins. We begin in nature, where music lives everywhere. And we begin with the understanding that the conversation itself, in all its beautiful manifestations, is what keeps the music playing.
Enjoy.
